Chess in Almaty: sections, clubs and tournament halls
Most chess in Almaty is taught in sections: children’s academies and schools with branches in residential complexes from Samal to Gagarin Park, which also fill weekends with qualifying tournaments for the rank categories. Adults find a game at the Debut club on Kabanbay Batyr and in rated blitz series, while Talgar and Kaskelen, in the foothills east and west of the city, keep clubs and federations of their own.

Chess960 at Almaty boards
No over-the-board Chess960 event has been traced in Almaty, Talgar or Kaskelen. Kazakhstan’s tournament list for 2025 to 2027 was read for Chess960, Fischer random and the Russian фишер in its titles, and none matched; three events at KIMEP University and at Chess Empire carry the word Freestyle in their names, but their pages do not say the pieces start from a shuffled row, so they are not counted.
In Chess960 the back-rank pieces take one of 960 starting arrangements, which turns opening preparation into calculation from the first move. Until an Almaty section or club runs it at the board, it can be played online at ch960.com.
The academies’ weekend leagues and qualifying events list no Chess960 group either.
How these lists are put in order
There are 50 places in this guide, 50 of them active or still awaiting a fresh dated mention. Most are known through the organiser and venue cells of the chess-results tournament server; the academies’ own sites, news items and two business directories add addresses, timetables and fees. The pages were opened between and .
Within each list the place with the newest dated mention comes first; no academy, club or organiser pays for a position or is judged better than another. A question the pages leave open reads “not stated by sources” rather than a guess. What the source marks and the two status lines mean is set out under sources and checks.
Has a section moved branch, or a club gone silent?
Almaty academies open and close branches in new residential complexes quickly, and a club can change halls between two tournaments. If a place here is out of date, or a section, club or series is missing, send a short note with a link to a page that shows it.
